Clinic Takes Part In BC Women's Hospital "Midlife Years"
The Westcoast Women's Clinic participated in a conference on Women's Midlife Years, sponsored by BC Women's Hospital, with a table at the Marriott Hotel April 7th and 8th. Thursday evening was open to the public to hear the key-note speaker, Dr. Alessandra Graziottin, world-renowned sexologist and gynecologist from Milan, Italy. Over two hundred women attended. Friday was an all day CME for GPs.

Dr. Graziottin highlighted the importance of dreams and visions to long-term health and sexual wellness. She pointed out that health expectancy and life expectancy are not the same. For example, in the U.S. health expectancy reaches its peak 14 years before life expectancy. In Canada, we're luckier. The average person can expect only 7 years of failing heath before the end of his or her life. Because of the tendency for disease to enter women's lives in their middle years, midlife is the perfect opportunity for preventative care to close the gap.

Dr. Graziottin said that women should not settle for unsatisfying sex in midlife and that bioidentical hormones may prove a boon for many. As for tips on how to improve our intimate relationships, she advised that we "scratch'" away at old habits that have formed and aim for better communication and tenderness. She often prescribes "dancing" for couples - with amazing results.
